Following custom, she has decided to marry Prince Charming – and when we meet her, her country is preparing for the celebration that will take place in a week. ![]() After the deaths of her evil stepmother and her father, she is now Queen of the Kingdom of Kanelaire. Although no one in the story is ever named outright, the protagonist of the story is very clearly Snow White. In Gaiman’s telling, a queen who wants more adventure in her life decides to rescue a princess that has been trapped by a curse. The story, intended for a middle-grade audience, is a mashup of the classic fairy tales – “Sleeping Beauty” and “Snow White” – doing its best to overturn some of the tropes associated with these folk tales, particularly around the lack of agency for their female characters. ![]() Originally published in a collection of short stories, Neil Gaiman’s novella The Sleeper and the Spindle was reissued as a separate book in 2015, this time with lushly intricate black and white illustrations by Chris Riddell. ![]()
